AIMHI PD programme: Advanced Formative Assessment

The AIMHI Centre is very pleased to offer a one day workshop for secondary teachers on Advanced Formative Assessment to be conducted by Kay Hawk from The Education Group.

Contents include:

• Assessment of learning and assessment for learning
• Research evidence and rationale
• A model for formative assessment
• Teaching students to self-assess
o Teachers to bring copies of two unit plans with accompanying assessments and student information
• Giving quality feedback to students
o Teachers to bring samples of written feedback given to students

Kay is an education consultant for The Education Group - previously a consultant and teacher for 14 years with Massey University. For the last 20 years she has worked in primary, intermediate and secondary schools throughout New Zealand in a wide range of capacities. Most involve knowledge of current research and the ability to translate this into practical strategies for trustees, school leaders and teachers. Kay was a researcher for the AIMHI project over five years and has worked in a development role in many of the AIMHI schools ever since. Assessment has been a particular interest and Kay has worked in primary, intermediate and secondary schools helping them to plan for effective and ethical assessment practice. Formative assessment practice, using data to improve learning and managing NCEA have been major foci.
